Express Entry Update: First 2026 Trades Occupations Draw

The Canadian immigration landscape continues to evolve as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) refines its category-based selection strategy. On April 2, 2026, the department conducted draw #408, marking the first time in the 2026 calendar year that the trades occupations category was specifically targeted.

This draw issued invitations to 1,500 candidates with a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 477 or higher. For individuals in skilled trades, this represents a significant opportunity, as category-specific scores remain substantially lower than general draw requirements.

Understanding the Trades Category Draw

The 477 CRS cutoff for trades is a clear indicator of the government’s priority to address critical labor shortages in the construction, industrial, and manufacturing sectors. Since the inception of category-based draws, trades have consistently required lower scores than other categories, such as STEM or Healthcare. However, the frequency of these draws has been lower, making it essential for eligible candidates to have their profiles ready at all times.

In-Depth Eligibility Requirements for Trades Category Draws

Navigating a category-based draw requires understanding a two-tiered eligibility system. Candidates must meet the foundational criteria of the Express Entry system while also satisfying the recently updated requirements of the specific category.

  1. Foundational Express Entry Eligibility

Before you can be considered for a Trades category draw, you must first successfully enter the Express Entry pool. This means you must meet the minimum criteria for at least one of the three core federal economic programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): Requires one year of continuous skilled work experience, a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 7 in all four abilities, and a minimum of 67 points on the FSWP selection grid.
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): Requires one year of skilled work experience inside Canada within the last three years. Language requirements vary based on your NOC TEER category (CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1, and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3).
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): Requires two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last five years, meeting the specific job requirements of that trade, and possessing either a valid job offer of continuous paid employment for at least one year or a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.

  1. Category-Specific Work Experience (The 12-Month Rule)

Merely being in the Express Entry pool with a background in trades is not enough. To be selected in a category-based draw for trades occupations, IRCC has updated the criteria. You must now meet the following precise requirements:

  • Duration: You must have accumulated at least 12 months of full-time work experience, or an equal amount of part-time experience.
  • Continuity: Unlike some core programs, this experience does not need to be continuous.
  • Timeline: This 12-month accumulation must have occurred within the three years immediately preceding the date IRCC issues your Invitation to Apply (ITA).
  • Location: The work experience can be gained inside Canada or abroad.
  • Single Occupation: The required 12 months must be in a single eligible occupation listed below, regardless of what your stated primary occupation is in your profile.

  1. Proof of Work Experience and Documentation

If you receive an ITA under this category, the burden of proof rests entirely on you to demonstrate your eligibility. IRCC officers scrutinize reference letters closely. Your employer reference letters must explicitly detail your job duties to align with the chosen NOC code. Vague descriptions or generic job titles will result in application refusal. Furthermore, providing pay stubs, tax records, and proof of any required trade certifications or licenses will strengthen your application.

Strategic Outlook for Candidates

At Elliott Immigration Corporation, we advise our clients to look beyond the general pool trends. If you are a trades professional, the April 2 draw confirms that IRCC is still actively seeking your skills. The strict documentation requirements mean you must start gathering evidence of your 12 months of experience well before a draw happens.

To maximize your chances, candidates should focus on:

  1. Ensuring all trades-related work experience is documented with precision to meet category-based requirements.
  2. Securing Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nominations to add 600 points to their profile.
  3. Improving language test results to reach higher Canadian Language Benchmarks.
