New Brunswick Strategic Initiative for Francophones

The New Brunswick Strategic Initiative for Francophones is a provincial immigration stream designed to attract and retain French-speaking professionals who want to live and work in New Brunswick. It supports the province’s goal of growing its francophone population and strengthening bilingual communities while addressing labour shortages across key sectors. Historically, New Brunswick has been home to the largest number of French speakers outside of Quebec, and there is a strong francophone community in the province.

Overview

This program operates under the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP) and targets francophone and bilingual candidates who have the skills, education, and experience needed in the province’s workforce. It is intended for individuals who can contribute to the economic and cultural life of New Brunswick’s French-speaking communities and who intend to settle permanently in the province.

Unlike many other programs, candidates can apply without a job offer if they receive an invitation directly from New Brunswick. Invitations are based on the province’s labour market priorities and demographic needs.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Strategic Initiative for Francophones, candidates must:

  • Be a French-speaking or bilingual skilled worker.
  • Demonstrate NCLC 5 or higher in French across all language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
  • Have the education, training, and work experience required for an eligible occupation.
  • Intend to live and work permanently in New Brunswick.
  • Demonstrate sufficient settlement funds based on family size.
  • Be invited to apply by the province through the official Strategic Initiative process.

New Brunswick typically selects candidates who have professional experience in areas facing labour shortages, such as healthcare, education, construction, manufacturing, and information technology.

How the Stream Works

New Brunswick identifies potential candidates through targeted recruitment events, international missions, or through existing immigration databases. Applicants who meet provincial priorities and demonstrate a genuine interest in living in New Brunswick may receive a Letter of Invitation.

Once invited, candidates submit an application to the NBPNP for provincial nomination. If approved, the nomination can be used to apply for permanent residence with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Those who already have an Express Entry profile may receive additional CRS points through the provincial nomination, increasing their chances of selection in a federal draw.

Recent Trends

Throughout 2025, New Brunswick has continued to prioritize French-speaking applicants through this initiative, aligning with the province’s objective to maintain its official bilingual status and expand francophone communities. Invitations have focused on skilled professionals with recent experience in healthcare, education, and skilled trades.

Benefits of the Program

  • No job offer required in some cases, depending on provincial invitation.
  • Opportunity to settle in one of Canada’s officially bilingual provinces.
  • Increased likelihood of selection for French-speaking candidates.
  • Support from local francophone networks and settlement agencies.
  • Provincial nomination leading to permanent residence.

Summary

The New Brunswick Strategic Initiative for Francophones offers a clear and flexible path to permanent residence for skilled French-speaking professionals who want to live in a vibrant bilingual environment. It allows qualified candidates to build careers in an economically strong province while helping preserve and grow French-language communities across New Brunswick.
